Editing

After the intro was completed for our music video we had to edit the rest of the video. First of all we shortened the song because it was to long and the footage we took would have been to repetitive if we kept the song at its full length.
When editing I put allot of clips of the band performing into it and also allot of clips of drug use.

Photoshop

Now that I have finished the planning for my inside and outside DVD cover and my DVD magazine I began to create my DVD magazine on the software Photoshop. This was the first time that I had ever used Photoshop but I still feel that I have started of working really well.
The first thing that I did was divide my page up so that it had a spine down the middle and each side was the same. After that I downloaded a font from the website www.dafont.com. The font that I downloaded was suitable to my genre of drum and bass. After I chose the font I inserted it down the spine of my DVD magazine.
The next thing that I did was typing in the song names on the back cover of the DVD.

Props

For the re-filming we did on the 4th of November we had to make sure that we had the correct props. So James brought in some proper drum sticks as before we had to use the xylophone ones as they were the only sticks available, so that didn’t look realistic. Andy also brought in his bass and electric guitar so that we could use them as out instruments and we borrowed a microphone, two amps and a drum kit from the music department. We also decided to wear smartly dressed clothes e.g. shirt and jeans. With the correct props and costume we were able to successfully film what looks like a real band.

Re - Filming

We re-filmed the band sequence as the last part of filming that we had to do. We met up on the 4th of November after school in PDH. We got a different boy to be the singer who did drama so he would fit in well with the way the singer would act, I was on the guitar, Andy on bass and James on the drums.
We used lots of different shots of each band member individually and as a group. We used the fig rig for most of the individual performances so that we could get close up moving out to mid shot. Also so that we could go from high to low angle and vice versa.
Georgina was controlling the lighting which was very good as she shone the lights on the band members in time with the beat of the song. This filming session was very affective as we got allot of useful footage that we could put into our music video.

Outside Cover DVD

For my front and back cover for my DVD I have used the band name “South of the Drop” on the spine and on the front, posted on a sign. Behind the sign there are the characters of the band but they are blurred out to show that the band members are not that’s what is most important. I have trees in the background which relates to my music video and I also have spiders coming out from the trees.
On the back cover I have an overlapping collage of images of the band at the top of the page. Underneath that I have the DVD songs number 1 – 12. The song names relate to the drum n bass genre.
Underneath that I have a bar code and Sony and BMG entertainment which is the record company.

Magazine Advert

My magazine advert is very illustrated with a little bit of writing. At the top of the advert I have the number of stars given by other magazines and how they like the new album. So I have put 5 and 4 stars by the other magazines to show that the album coming out is really good.
At the moment my advert looks like it’s in the genre of gothic or grunge because of the dark colours that I have used. So instead of using a black background I would use the colour blue. Also the titles are in red and so is the pathway up to the house so I will change that colour also to white.
At both sides of the advert there are to trees and most leaves have fallen off of the trees. There are still leaves to hit the ground which I have chosen to show that when the last leaf hits the floor that’s the time the album will be released.
I have chosen to put lots of spiders on the front cover to represent the new song “Tarantula”. The spiders are coming out from a house in the woods for more of a spooky effect.

Re - Filming

After the footage of the Decks in DHM was not the best it could be. So we took a camera and tripod and re filmed me playing on the decks. We also made a cut out of a stencil of a spider and stuck it ontop of the vinyl. This is so that the footage can relate to the lyrics of the song.

I also made sure that the lighting was correctly positioned ontop of the decks so that they stand out. I also moved the camera around still focusing on the decks so that the music video will have a variety of movement shots.

Editing

During today's lesson i did the editing for the intro of my song "Tarantula". As the song is calm and relaxed at the beginning i used footage which resembles this. Such as lots of quick shots of the surrounding greenery which includes shots of trees and leaves.

I used fast past editing so that it will keep the audience interested as its keeps an upbeat tempo. I have edited the clips so that it is in time with the into of the song itself. The imagery of the characters i have used I've concealed them with the scenery so that it conceals there identity.

This is the look of the band the Prodigy. As you can see they have simple clothing, which include vest tops and jeans. There performance can be seen as going wild and crazzy when performing. Most band members have longish hair and tatoos all over there body.

Uploading Footage

After filming a section of our film which includes part of the story in the music video and the band performing we decided to upload it onto the Mac computers. After looking at the footage we uploaded we decided what was good and what was good about it. We found out that we needed to re-film the band performing section. The things that we need to re-film include ;

Using the correct drum sticks on the drums,
Using more of the space we have in the room e.g including the steps,
Using a different person to sing instead of the bass guitar player singing,
Get more shots while the camera is moving around the band.

After deciding what needed to be re-filmed we decided when to meet up and film what we needed again.

Filming

In our second section of filming our group decided to film a section of the narration part in our music video. The film we took worked well as we had the right props, setting and costume. We had a syringe and a belt, dark clothing and we were in a dark enclosed space. We took many shots of the action taking place which is the characters in the music video injecting themselves with drugs. We took many close up shots of the syringe and the surrounding setting. We also moved the camera around so that the shots were shaky to create a tense atmosphere. There was also a set of stairs above the characters so we put the camera above that looking down through a gap. This shot hides the identity of the characters.

Because of our song Tarantula not having a music video we needed to have another look at another song by Pendulum. This is a music video by Pendulum called Slam. This gives us ideas of how the band put across there ideas of a music video.

Filming

In our first lesson of filming we went into a music room where a set of decks were available. Because i took a DJ class i know a bit on how to Dj. So we positioned the camera above the decks and started to film. I did EQ tricks, switching across the faders, spinning the vinyl and scratching.

With the camera i used such tricks like zooming in on the decks and zooming out. This film can be used in certain parts of our music video. Like the parts when the beat in the song "Tarantula" drops.

Storyboards

This is my results from the questionnaire that i carried out. My results show that the most people that took my questionnaire was from ages 16-24. Also shows that the top three genre of music were Rock, Dance and Techno.

Godwins Theories

Godwin came up with three theories to do with lyrics in a song. There are three main theories:

Illustration: The visual narrative tells the story of the lyrics in the literal meaning/in a literal way.

Amplification: The visual narrative does not contradict the lyrics, but creates new levels of meaning (in a metaphorical way). In amplification, the theme of the lyrics is present in the visuals.

Disjuncture: The visual narrative goes against or does not match the lyrics in the song.

For my music video i have chosen to use the theory illustration, so the visual narrative tells the story of the lyrics. I have also chose to use the theory amplification in the way that the tarantuala can be represented in different ways.

This is a table showing an analysis of 3 different songs but of the same genre. The genre analysed was drum n bass / electronic.

Genre of Band

As mentioned before, as a group we decided to use Electronic Rock/Drum n Bass as our chosen genre for our music video. Our song choice is "Tarantula" by Pendulum.

We decided upon the genre of Drum n Bass after our original choice of Reggae fell through due to the need of extravagant/exotic locations and so on.

Roles Within the Group

Andrew – Organizing Musicians to come and perform in the music video in the Live Music sections.

Georgina – Maybe acting as “character” in the narrative sections of the Music Video. Also in charge of organization (such as Shooting Schedules).

John – In the video as the DJ (using the decks as heard in the track). Also planning about the image of the band. Most imagery within the storyboards.

James - Filming and editing.

Bordwell and Thompsons four categories of editing

Graphic
Draws upon mise en scene and cinematography,
Graphic match – linking shots by graphic similarities,
Graphic continuity – centre of interest constant throughout the cuts
Graphic discontinuity – juxtaposition of centre of interest.

Rhythmic
Considers the duration of each shot.

Spatial
Mise en scene – how it is established.

Temporal
To do with time – is it like a film ? is it in chronological order ?

This is Bordwell and Thompsons four categories of editing which gives me some ideas on the editing i can use when i edit my music video.
